It is commonly-accepted that 2MASS will greatly benefit
both ground-based and space-based research for some time to come. However,
recent evidence indicates that its legacy will persist for centuries and
be of use in other quadrants of the Galaxy as well!
This is the Astrometrics Lab on the starship USS Voyager,
currently lost in the Delta Quadrant.
As Voyager makes its way back to the Alpha Quadrant, it
is nearing the Galactic Center. Note the datascreen in the background.
As a guide to this seldom-visited region of the galaxy,
they appear to be making use of the 2MASS dataset, displaying the Galactic
Center data taken back in the 20th century.
It may be out of focus, but it's definitely 2MASS! Compare:
