Stellar Astrophysics
ASTR 410
USC fall 2004
Assignment #1:
- Due September 8 (Wednesday) at the beginning of
class.
- New problems will be posted after (approx.) each class, and
will be announced in the lecture.
- the complete set of problems for
assignment #1 is now
posted on this website (GKS; 09.01.2004, 7pm PDT).
Problems:
- From wk. 1:
- Problems 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 from Carroll & Ostlie.
- Supplemental problem #1: Calculate the length of
the shadow cast by a 100m tall building in LA at the:
summer solstice, winter solstice, vernal equinox and
autumnal equinox.
- Problems 3.1a, 3.1b, 3.2, 3.3 from Carroll & Ostlie.
- Supplemental problem #2: A binary (i.e., 2 star)
system consists of stars A, B with a flux ratio of 3. The magnitude of the
combined system is +4. What is the magnitude of each
star separately?
- From wk. 2:
- Supplemental problem #3: Suppose for the
double-slit (Young's experiment) set-up, the distance
to the screen is 1m, and the slit separation is 15
microns. If we observe that the distance from the
straight-through position to the second bright band
is 5.25cm:
- What is the wavelength of the light?
- In what region of the electromagnetic spectrum
does this wavelength lie?
- What is the angle between the 3rd and 5th
bright bands?
