I actually worked at the tail end of the IRAS era. When I first came to IPAC as a student, I worked on the development of the HIRES algorithm, a method of image reconstruction that used the information in the IRAS scan data to recover some of the resolution that the optical train could deliver (normally IRAS images are limited by the subtended angle of the detector footprint).
